Empirical research has demonstrated the existence and prevalence of the personal influence model and gao guanxi (exploitation of interpersonal relations) in the field of public relations and corporate communication in Oriental countries. More recently, mianzi (face) and renqing (favor) particularly shows its potential to be a viable variable in public relations practice, relationship management, and conflict resolution. This study aims to understand the forms of and the extent to which guanxi-related practice in general and face and favor in particular exist in public relations in Hong Kong. Moreover, the effect measures of public relations effectiveness in relation to face and favor, positively and negatively, will also be explored. The ultimate goal is to enrich the knowledge of public relations and communication management in Greater China though cross-regional comparisons. (SS07717)
